Artist Statement 2025
One of the obvious qualities of my artwork is a type of innocence inherent in my images and in the way that I depict them on the canvas. After more than 30 years of painting I still have a child-like sense of awe at the beauty of the world, animals, the universe above, and human beings in that environment.
The simplified drawing in my paintings is one of the ways that I feel a connection to that sentiment and try to express it. I am also strongly affected by colors and the plastic nature of the oil paints that I use, so that I often exploit the 2 dimensional aspects of a painting and celebrate its flatness, while also incorporating 3 dimensional illusions to give tension to the image.
I also love the handmade quality of paintings and have always felt a connection to primitive art and cave paintings. For years I have experimented with textures in my paints and cultivated the feeling of painting on a wall, rock, or earth. However these days I have been moving toward very soft surfaces by painting on unprimed canvas that allows the paint to lay on the fibers in a different way.
My father was a complete artist and always stressed the importance of knowledge, craft, and draughtsmanship. My love for classical drawing is obvious in my own realistic drawings, as is my love for
the ethnic influences of the home that I grew up in. I was constantly exposed to Latin American art and it shows in my approach to picture making. Although born in the United States, my artwork is deeply rooted in my Colombian heritage.
I do not generally work in themes because I get bored quickly once I have attained a goal or make a commentary in my painting. Instead I look for challenges everywhere and try to move from one painting to another of an entirely different composition and story. For me, the paintings are mostly stories and sub-conscious thoughts and strong feelings that reveal themselves while I am working. I do not make finished sketches for the paintings but instead I trust that a small idea will grow once I start the work.
I paint what interests me at the moment. I paint what I am obsessed with or what I have been thinking about lately. I paint to excite myself and to release a powerful emotion that resides within me. I also paint in order to improve on a technique.
As for style, I never think about it unless I have to write about my own work like I am doing right now.

Una característica notable de mi obra es la inocencia y la frescura que se percibe en mis pinturas, tanto en los temas que abordo como en la técnica que empleo. Después de más de 30 años dedicándome a la pintura, sigo sintiendo una profunda admiración por la belleza del mundo, los animales, el universo y los seres humanos.
Mi estilo de dibujo simple y directo busca conectar con ese sentimiento de asombro y expresarlo de manera auténtica. Los colores y la plasticidad de los óleos que utilizo también juegan un papel importante en mi proceso creativo, por lo que exploro la bidimensionalidad del cuadro y celebro su planitud, al tiempo que incorporo ilusiones de tres dimensiones para crear tensión en la imagen.
Me fascina la cualidad artesanal de la pintura y siempre he sentido una conexión con el arte primitivo, como las pinturas rupestres. Aunque en el pasado experimenté con texturas en mis cuadros, buscando esa sensación de pintar sobre una pared o una roca, ahora me inclino por superficies suaves, pintando sobre lienzo sin imprimar, lo que permite que la pintura se integre de manera única con las fibras del material.
Mi padre, un artista completo, siempre destacó la importancia del conocimiento, la artesanía y el dibujo. Mi amor por el dibujo clásico se refleja en mis obras realistas, y también se nota la influencia del arte latinoamericano en mi hogar. Aunque nací en los Estados Unidos, mi arte está profundamente enraizado en mi herencia colombiana.
No suelo trabajar en temas específicos, ya que me canso rápidamente cuando logro lo que quiero o hago algún comentario en la pintura. En cambio, busco desafíos constantes y trato de saltar de un cuadro a otro con composiciones e historias diferentes. Para mí, las pinturas son historias y pensamientos que emergen del subconsciente, sentimientos fuertes que se revelan mientras trabajo. No hago bocetos detallados, sino que confío en que una idea pequeña crecerá a medida que trabajo.
Pinto lo que me interesa en el momento, lo que me llama la atención, lo que me obsesiona o en lo que he estado pensando últimamente. Pinto para emocionarme, para liberar una emoción fuerte que tengo dentro y para mejorar alguna técnica. En cuanto al estilo, nunca pienso en ello a menos que tenga que escribir sobre mi propio trabajo, como ahora.
