Artist Statement 2025
One of the obvious qualities of my artwork is a type of innocence inherent in my images and in the way that I depict them on the canvas. After more than 30 years of painting I still have a child-like sense of awe at the beauty of the world, animals, the universe above, and human beings in that environment.
The simplified drawing in my paintings is one of the ways that I feel a connection to that sentiment and try to express it. I am also strongly affected by colors and the plastic nature of the oil paints that I use, so that I often exploit the 2 dimensional aspects of a painting and celebrate its flatness, while also incorporating 3 dimensional illusions to give tension to the image.
I also love the handmade quality of paintings and have always felt a connection to primitive art and cave paintings. For years I have experimented with textures in my paints and cultivated the feeling of painting on a wall, rock, or earth. However these days I have been moving toward very soft surfaces by painting on unprimed canvas that allows the paint to lay on the fibers in a different way.
My father was a complete artist and always stressed the importance of knowledge, craft, and draughtsmanship. My love for classical drawing is obvious in my own realistic drawings, as is my love for
the ethnic influences of the home that I grew up in. I was constantly exposed to Latin American art and it shows in my approach to picture making. Although born in the United States, my artwork is deeply rooted in my Colombian heritage.
I do not generally work in themes because I get bored quickly once I have attained a goal or make a commentary in my painting. Instead I look for challenges everywhere and try to move from one painting to another of an entirely different composition and story. For me, the paintings are mostly stories and sub-conscious thoughts and strong feelings that reveal themselves while I am working. I do not make finished sketches for the paintings but instead I trust that a small idea will grow once I start the work.
I paint what interests me at the moment. I paint what I am obsessed with or what I have been thinking about lately. I paint to excite myself and to release a powerful emotion that resides within me. I also paint in order to improve on a technique.
As for style, I never think about it unless I have to write about my own work like I am doing right now.

Una de las cualidades obvias de mi obra es un tipo de inocencia inherente en mis imágenes y en la forma en que las represento en el lienzo. Después de más de 30 años pintando, aún conservo una sensación de asombro infantil ante la belleza del mundo, los animales, el universo y los seres humanos en ese entorno.
El dibujo simplificado en mis pinturas es una de las formas en que siento una conexión con ese sentimiento y trato de expresarlo. También me afectan mucho los colores y la naturaleza plástica de las pinturas al óleo que uso, por lo que a menudo exploto los aspectos bidimensionales de una pintura y celebro su planitud, al tiempo que incorporo ilusiones tridimensionales para darle tensión a la imagen.
También me encanta la cualidad artesanal de las pinturas y siempre he sentido una conexión con el arte primitivo y las pinturas rupestres. Durante años he experimentado con texturas en mis pinturas y he cultivado la sensación de pintar sobre una pared, roca o tierra. Sin embargo, en estos días me he estado moviendo hacia superficies muy suaves pintando sobre lienzo sin imprimar que permite que la pintura se deposite en las fibras de una manera diferente.
Mi padre era un artista completo y siempre destacó la importancia del conocimiento, la artesanía y el dibujo. Mi amor por el dibujo clásico es evidente en mis propios dibujos realistas, como también lo es mi amor por las influencias étnicas del hogar en el que crecí. Estuve constantemente expuesto al arte latinoamericano y se nota en mi enfoque para hacer imágenes. Aunque nací en los Estados Unidos, mi arte está profundamente arraigado en mi herencia Colombiana.
Por lo general, no trabajo en temas porque me aburro rápidamente una vez que alcanzo una meta o hago un comentario en mi pintura. En cambio, busco desafíos en todas partes y trato de pasar de una pintura a otra de una composición e historia completamente diferentes. Para mí, las pinturas son principalmente historias y pensamientos subconscientes y sentimientos fuertes que se revelan mientras estoy trabajando. No hago bocetos terminados para las pinturas, sino que confío en que una pequeña idea crecerá una vez que comience el trabajo.
Pinto lo que me interesa en el momento. Pinto lo que me obsesiona o en lo que he estado pensando últimamente. Pinto para emocionarme y para liberar una emoción poderosa que reside dentro de mí. También pinto para mejorar una técnica.
En cuanto al estilo, nunca pienso en ello a menos que tenga que escribir sobre mi propio trabajo como lo estoy haciendo ahora.
