Artist Statement 2026
After more than thirty years of painting, I continue to approach my work with the same child-like sense of awe I felt when I first began. I remain deeply moved by the beauty of the natural world, animals, the vastness of the universe, and the presence of human beings within that magnificent setting.
This sense of wonder is reflected in the simplified drawing that characterizes my paintings. Through economy of line and form, I seek to reconnect with that pure, direct response to the world around me. At the same time, I am passionately engaged with color and the physical, malleable nature of oil paint. I deliberately celebrate the inherent flatness and two-dimensionality of the painting surface while introducing moments of three-dimensional illusion, creating a productive tension that animates the image.
I have always been drawn to the handmade quality of painting and feel a strong kinship with primitive art and ancient cave paintings. For many years I experimented with heavy textures, striving to evoke the feeling of painting directly on rock, earth, or ancient walls. More recently, I have shifted toward softer, more delicate surfaces by working on unprimed canvas. This allows the paint to sink into and interact with the raw fibers in intimate and unpredictable ways.
My father, a dedicated artist himself, instilled in me a profound respect for knowledge, craft, and strong draughtsmanship. The influence of classical drawing remains evident in my realistic works, while the vibrant ethnic and cultural environment of my Colombian heritage—deeply present in the home where I grew up—continues to shape my approach to color, composition, and picture-making. Though born in the United States, my artistic voice is unmistakably rooted in my Latin American background.
I rarely work in series or pursue overarching themes, as I tend to lose interest once a particular visual problem has been solved or a statement has been made. Instead, I seek constant challenge, moving fluidly from one painting to the next—each with its own distinct composition, narrative, and emotional world. My paintings emerge as visual stories, subconscious reflections, and powerful emotions that reveal themselves during the act of painting. I do not rely on finished preparatory sketches; rather, I begin with a small spark of an idea and trust that it will grow and transform as the work unfolds.
Above all, I paint what obsesses me in the moment—what captures my attention, stirs my thoughts, or demands to be expressed. I paint to excite myself, to release deep-seated emotions, and to push my understanding of technique further with every canvas. Each painting is both a personal discovery and an act of celebration.

Después de más de 30 años pintando, todavía conservo una especie de asombro infantil ante la belleza del mundo, los animales, el universo y los seres humanos dentro de ese entorno.
La simplificación del dibujo en mis pinturas es una de las formas en que conecto con ese sentimiento y trato de expresarlo. También me afectan profundamente los colores y la plasticidad de las pinturas al óleo que uso, por eso suelo aprovechar los aspectos bidimensionales de la pintura y celebro su planitud, mientras incorporo ilusiones tridimensionales para crear tensión en la imagen.
Además, amo la calidad artesanal de la pintura y siempre me he sentido conectado con el arte primitivo y las pinturas rupestres. Durante años experimenté con texturas en mis pinturas y cultivé la sensación de estar pintando sobre una pared, una roca o la tierra misma. Sin embargo, últimamente he estado inclinándome hacia superficies muy suaves, pintando sobre lienzo sin imprimación, lo que permite que la pintura se asiente sobre las fibras de una manera diferente.
Mi padre fue un artista completo y siempre enfatizó la importancia del conocimiento, la técnica y el dibujo. Mi amor por el dibujo clásico se nota claramente en mis dibujos realistas, al igual que mi amor por las influencias étnicas de la casa en la que crecí. Estuve constantemente expuesto al arte latinoamericano y eso se refleja en mi forma de hacer imágenes. Aunque nací en Estados Unidos, mi obra está profundamente arraigada en mi herencia colombiana.
Generalmente no trabajo por temas porque me aburro rápido una vez alcanzo una meta o hago un comentario en mi pintura. En cambio, busco desafíos en todas partes e intento pasar de una pintura a otra con una composición y una historia completamente diferentes. Para mí, las pinturas son en su mayoría historias, pensamientos subconscientes y emociones fuertes que se revelan mientras estoy trabajando.
No hago bocetos terminados para las pinturas, sino que confío en que una pequeña idea crecerá una vez empiece a pintar.
Pinto lo que me interesa en el momento. Pinto aquello con lo que estoy obsesionado o lo que he estado pensando últimamente. Pinto para emocionarme a mí mismo y para liberar una emoción poderosa que vive dentro de mí. También pinto para mejorar alguna técnica.
